History
Honouring the old, welcoming the new
Our guests often ask us why the founders of our hotel look so serious.
We also think our ancestor Johann Jakob Mennel had good reasons to smile. When he left the Austro-Hungarian navy in Trieste and opened the Schiff guesthouse in Bregenzerwald in 1840, he made a good choice. To this day, our hotel enjoys a central yet peaceful location in the village. And the view to the south from the bedrooms and from the garden is as unspoilt as it was in our great grandfather’s day.

In the gourmet restaurant guests are surrounded by the timeless charm of the historic Wälder Stube. The careful conversion and extension work carried out in 2014 has further enhanced Das Schiff’s atmosphere.
The new suites and distinctive timber construction of our “Ernele” shop and restaurant blend the new and historic elements of Das Schiff to create a natural, harmonious whole. Our guests like to say that Das Schiff has character.
